  1. Pain is regarded as chronic when it does not go away and is experienced by a patient on most days of the week for at least 3 months.
  2. The leading cause of chronic pain is reported to be injury, commonly from playing sport, and accidents. Pain also results from chronic illnesses, degeneration and other triggers.
  3. People who experience chronic pain often experience a decrease in quality of life including overall physical and emotional health; psychological and social well-being.
  4. Opioids such as morphine, oxycodone, buprenorphine and fentanyl have proved useless in many cases of chronic pain.
  5. When someone has chronic pain, the nerves that carry pain signals to the brain, or the brain itself, are behaving in an unusual way. The nerves might be more sensitive than usual, or the brain might be misreading other signals as pain.
  6. People with chronic pain who actively manage their pain on a daily basis do better than those who rely on passive therapies such as medication or surgery.
  7. Chronic pain has biopsychosocial implications. It is associated with reduced quality of life, including increased risk of anxiety and depression.

  9. Medications, acupuncture, local electrical stimulation, and brain stimulation, as well as surgery, are some treatments for chronic pain. Some physicians use placebos, which in some cases has resulted in a lessening or elimination of pain.
  10. Scientists believe that advances in neuroscience will lead to more and better treatments for chronic pain in the years to come.
  11. The idea of “Radical Acceptance” can help in coping with chronic pain. This skill may be defined as accepting reality for what it is. That pain is part of your everyday life and your current option is to change how you respond to this reality.
  12. Anxiety, anger, depression, and adjustment disorders are mental health issues commonly related to chronic pain. Symptoms of these disorders are experienced physically and get worse with stress.
  13. It has been shown that approximately 60% of individuals diagnosed with chronic pain rely on medication. Many, however, are frustrated with the effectiveness of medications.

  15. There is increasing evidence that over time, untreated chronic pain eventually rewrites the central nervous system, causing pathological changes to the brain and spinal cord, and that these in turn cause greater pain.

  17. Did you know? Because there is no way to objectively measure chronic pain, many patients have experienced their pain being questioned, dismissed, or downplayed.
